Bauxite / Laterite
Bauxite / Laterite
Bauxite is a sedimentary rock and is the main source of aluminium. Bauxite consists mostly of the aluminium mineralsgibbsite (Al(OH)3), boehmite (γ-AlO(OH)) and diaspore (α-AlO(OH)), mixed with the two iron oxides goethite and haematite, the aluminium clay mineral kaolinite and small amounts of anatase (TiO2) and ilmenite (FeTiO3 or FeO.TiO2).
Besides Aluminium production, Bauxite is essential ore for Refractory and Chemical industries. India has 3,896 million tonnes of bauxite reserves (as per NMI database, based on UNFC system) which is sufficient to meet both domestic and export demands. The resources of Refractory and Chemical grades are limited and together account for about 4%. By States, Odisha alone accounts for 51% of country's resources of bauxite followed by Andhra Pradesh (16%), Gujarat (9%), Jharkhand (6%), Maharashtra (5%) and Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh (4% each).
Gimpex added Bauxite to the list of Industrial Minerals since it is in the business for over 40 years and over time developed expertise and network to market the product. In Gimpex had started procuring Bauxite from countries like Malaysia as well – before the Export Ban was implemented by the Malaysian Government.
